Smart Parking for Trucks

Project description

Truck drivers are faced with a critical shortage in truck parking due to a dramatic growth in commercial vehicle truck travel on our nation’s roads.  A fatigued driver that must drive around to search for a parking place to rest can become not only a roadway hazard, but an environmental hazard as well because they generate unnecessary diesel emissions.

California Partners for Advanced Transport and Highways is partnering with Caltrans and several other agencies to explore possible roles for ITS in alleviating the truck parking problem. Researchers aim to use ITS technologies to determine parking availability at a particular location and then transmit this information to commercial vehicle drivers on the road. This may be accomplished through changeable message signs, radio, mobile phones, and onboard computers.
