Transit Barriers

Project Description

Building upon a past project funded by Caltrans and the Mineta Institute, IMR is continuing its research on older mobility and working in conjunction with the Transportation Safety Center to evaluate the transit training class at the Rossmoor Retirement Center in Walnut Creek, California, and identify other barriers that may prevent seniors from taking transit.

The transit training class takes participants on bus rides along the routes of two major transit options available to Rossmoor residents, emphasizing the destinations that residents frequent most. Participants also learn about bus fares and where to access transit information. Rossmoor residents are surveyed immediately before and after undergoing transit training. A longitudinal study with participants from up to two years ago will evaluate if the Rossmoor transit training class has changed participant behavior in the long term.
